Precious and base metals exploration and production, resource estimation as a JORC competent person role, and geo-metallurgy expertise.

Operation and management of geo-analytical laboratory facilities servicing global exploration, mining and mineral markets. Development of innovative solutions for chemical, mineralogical and metallurgical analysis.

Materials Science

The technology and design of advanced mineral products and the production and operations of powder processing and materials handling systems.

Statistics

In-house capabilities in advanced mathematics and statistics. This has enabled IM Standards to develop proprietary models for ISO 17034 accredited certification and proficiency testing capabilities.

Bruce Armstrong

Managing Director
BSc (Hons), MBA, MAIG

Bruce has been a geologist for 25 years, having worked across greenfields exploration, resource development and estimation and feasibility studies for open pit and underground mining.

He has worked with various commodities, including precious metals, rare earths, base metals, and ferrous metals. He also has postgraduate qualifications in Business and previously held positions as a JORC-competent person for several ASX companies in the resource due diligence process for project financing and assay QA/QC.

As IMS’ Managing Director, Bruce leads the producing homogeneous coarse Certified Reference Materials (CRM) that rival traditional pulverised CRM for analyte variance using proprietary procedures and technology developed in-house.

Dr John Carter

General Manager
PhD Applied Physics, MAusIMM

John specialises in minerals exploration quality control, laboratory analysis and management, automation technology, research and development, minerals, product development and management, machine learning, spectral analysis and infrared spectroscopy.

He has extensive geo-analytical and mineralogical experience and was responsible for research, development, and proficiency testing programs. His background also includes monitoring key quality and business metrics, essential accounts engagement and production and technical experiences in industrial minerals and high purity ceramic powder manufacturing.

John joined Pilbara Standards in August 2021 as General Manager and is responsible for operations, process development, ISO certifications and strategic growth projects.

Sonja McFarlane

Quality Manager

Sonja has a wide range of experience in the implementation, maintenance and auditing of quality systems.

Beginning her career as an industrial chemist, she developed an interest in ‘all things quality’ and has continued to pursue this passion. Her expertise also extends to laboratories conducting chemical, biological, mechanical and construction materials testing. Several of the industries she worked for include inks and coatings, petroleum and industrial chemicals, fats and oils, inspection of bulk liquids and dry cargo.

Having completed formal auditor training with SAI Global, NATA and ANAB (USA), she has experience auditing to ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17025 and holds Exemplar Global Lead Auditor Certification in Quality Management Systems. She has also completed auditor training to ISO 14001.

Sonja joined IMS in February 2021 as Quality Manager to manage their quality system requirements.

Tymen Brom

Director & Technical Consultant
BSc (Chem), MAusIMM

Tymen has 30 years of experience across several technical and managerial roles, including laboratory technician and chemist/metallurgist in analytical, production and research laboratories.

His expertise includes the establishment of ISO quality systems, as well as an approved NATA signatory for chemical analysis and mechanical testing for several laboratories. He has complementary experience in business planning and risk evaluation/mitigation, a history of working with mining industries and research-intensive institutes and expertise in the high knowledge start-up business.

As IMS’ Corporate Services Manager, Tymen had a pivotal role in managing Pilbara Standards’ ISO9001-2015 accreditation process.
