Field Matched Materials

IM Standards has developed (patent-pending) crushed gold certified reference materials to offer a superior alternative to pulverised gold CRMs. The CRMs are manufactured from specialised materials that match the physical and chemical characteristics of field samples, providing laboratories with complete visibility over quality control for sample preparation.

We offer field matched materials in batch sizes from small to large (20 tonnes).

WHY IM Standards CRUSHED GOLD?

Precision

Crushed gold CRMs have similar within-unit variability as samples from the field, and similar between-unit variability as traditional pulverised reference materials when CRM units undergo sample preparation. This makes them ideal for routine quality control of sample preparation.

Accuracy

IM Standards crushed gold CRM are certified by analysis at multiple ISO17025 accredited laboratories across multiple methods including fire assay, PhotonAssay™, and PAL system.  Metrological traceability is established through this network of competent laboratories.

Where Can Crushed Gold Be Used?

Photon Assay

The issues confronting QC monitoring of the PhotonAssay ™ process is need for blind submission of CRM, and submission of CRM which are similar in particle size distribution to the routine samples being analysed.

Crushed Au CRMs from IM Standards address these challenges by being available in 2kg packs which when submitted as part of the routine samples also require sample preparation. The crushed Au CRM are also available in 500g packs for QC of the analytical process.

PAL

Crushed gold CRMs solve an immediate problem for laboratories that use PAL machines to analyse gold samples.

Pulverised gold is not a suitable certified material for this process because it does not mimic the routine analysis of gold samples which require comminution for liberation of the gold particles. This can lead to laboratories shortcutting proper process.

Fire Assay

Test the entire laboratory process from sample receipt, through sample preparation and sub-sampling, through to analysis with blind CRM samples.

At Iluka Resources, we rely on reference materials for quality control monitoring of our laboratory processes during mineral sands exploration and processing. We first contacted Independent Mineral Standards (IMS) to prepare a batch of mineral sands reference materials. After evaluating the homogeneity of the batch provided by IMS, it became apparent that batches from our previous supplier required reprocessing. IMS has since reprocessed three batches of reference material for us, resulting in a significant decrease in typical relative standard deviation from 4.5% to 0.9%. By switching to IMS as our supplier, we have greatly improved our process control and quality control through the use of fit-for-purpose reference materials.
